The Yets
Letter To A Boy Royal Terns Records Highlighting their new 6-track EP, South Carolina alt-pop group The Yets present a brand new video for their track Letter To A Boy. Released for the new year, it’s the perfect way to start the journey. With Craig Anderson-Snook and Robin Wilson combining their talents to create unique and competent nouveau rock n roll, the world is a better place thanks to their skills. Where Robin is the voice of the band, Craig brings his years of experience in professional musicianship and the all-important indie record label. Robin Wilson, formerly of Skirt, has found her niche in The Yets after moving back to South Carolina after a few years in Georgia. Letter To A Boy is a song about a mother writing to her son and the feelings that come through when thinking of what to say. A burst of drums and a shimmering guitar bring the sound to the front as the swaying rhythm reveals a dreamy sensation. Vocals enter, wordless notes hang in gentle phrases as the music opens further. The verse begins, the shoegazing element clasps the sound in firm fingers as the harmonies and melodies smoothly float through spacious warmth. A formidable talent hides behind beautiful and excellently produced blurs of notation and feeling. A progressive and laid-back number, Letter To A Boy is beautifully written and takes care of the feel-good energy we all need these days. The Pull Of Autumn
Funhouse Featuring Luke ‘Skyscraper’ James The impressive and beautifully produced 15-track album is out and the collective of art rock creators have another glimpse for us. Enticing fans into their world with a sample of the whole, Funhouse is fast becoming a soundtrack for our crazy times. Like a stressful adventure playground, life throws all kinds of turmoil and obstacles towards us and we just have to keep smiling. Leaning on a variety of local talent, The Pull Of Autumn involve key figures on the live and studio scene to produce the best sound possible. With Luke James of I.R.S. recording artist Fashion featuring on this track and with a place on each of the previous 3 albums, Funhouse is more than suitable to introduce people to this fascinating music act. A dual of acoustic guitar and synth open in a stereo of sound. Haunting and distraught sounding vocals span out through the open corridor. Strange synthesiser curls and creeps in shadowy placements as the song takes us on its disturbing journey. Odd chord changes and dreary minor keys drape the skeletal framework of guitar as the song journeys onward. Folk and psychedelia break the boundaries in novel directions as we are drawn into the mysterious and enchanting Funhouse. Jessie Kilguss
Wuthering Heights New York City Re-imagining the classic Kate Bush song Wuthering Heights, the New York City star Jessie Kilguss presents a stunning version to follow on from her album - What Do Whales Dream About At Night? With accolades ranging from media such as Guitar World and American Songwriter, it’s no surprise that she’s worked with Charlie Nieland to produce this song. Since working with status icons of the industry such as Debbie Harry, Blondie, Scissor Sisters, and Rufus Wainwright, adding his magic touch to Jessie Kilguss’s work makes it that bit more special. The single has been produced with a brilliant video, engineered by Alex Dar, a Russian-born artist, the Gramercy Arms singer is keeping the world together even when others are not. A solitary acoustic guitar pins the melody to the page with the familiar chord changes. Jessie Kilguss begins to sing. The words rise from memory as the slow and graceful version opens out like a leafy avenue. The story of the song drifts in verses like chapters, a delicate and intimate projection forms a unique bubble of sound that shimmers in the luminescent atmosphere. We can sing to the words if you know them, as the music grows into the shoes it was given, glockenspiel joins the mix to elevate the dainty and delicate rendition. Pretty, atmospheric, and full of character, Jessie Kilguss’s cover of Wuthering Heights brings the song to new levels of clarity. Quiz Show
Dime A Dozen Magic Door Record Label Re-emerging from a two-decade hiatus, Shudder To Think members Chris Matthews and Jesse Krakow relight the beacon with their new band Quiz Show. Along with drummer Joe Billy, the trio are triumphant once more with their New Jersey alt-rock sound. Their first album is due out later in the year and it contains two singles recorded a few years ago under the wing of living legend Ray Ketchem. Before working with Quiz Show he’d produced work by Gramercy Arms, Versus, Elk City, Luna, and Guided By Voices. Dime A Dozen is released alongside What If as a preliminary drum-roll for the entire album in March. A funky drum score opens the track as a treble rich guitar begins to strike a melody to match the expressive vocal. Angst fuelled delivery encapsulates the vocal line as the pacey and dynamic guitar part feeds into the hardcore element. Chords rise from the single note melody that rings and resonates in spacious reverb. A punk and emo rock-fusion seems to force the musical energy into a catchy and hook-laden equilibrium that we can’t help but love. A twinge of attitude matches melodious rule-breaking as slightly discordant lines patch into the meticulously made music. A Cloud OF Ravens
Requiem For The Sun Nexilis Records With a new album on the way this April, A Cloud Of Ravens fly the roost from their home of New York to encircle the globe with their gloom rock sound. The duo brings their brand of heaviness to the fold with inspirations such as Killing Joke, Bauhaus, and Soft Kill (eBay links) ensuring their ethos sits on firm foundations. A song about dark times, that come and go like the night, Requiem For The Sun takes a powerful leap towards expressing the sense of hope and misery that encapsulates those who are under the waves. Together, Beth Narducci on the bass and Matthew McIntosh on guitar and vocals bring the energy, the power, and the impetus to look to better days. Perhaps when the tour begins at the end of March, the sun will already be up. Cracking snare and bass drum rhythms break out with the slosh of hard-struck cymbal. A deep bass melody opens with rhythmic bursts of tone. Keyboards and electric guitar fill the void as the vocals begin. Gothic and spooky harmonies reverberate through projections of impassioned sound. A force of rhythm keeps the music elevated as the vocal section rises and falls in tidal motions. A building up of intensity fuels the verse before a punchy chorus lunges forward with eyes wide. A masterpiece of shadow rock, the fun and slightly sinister music reaches the deepest corners of the scene. Break You Indiestructable Records Acid Test’s Lucy Di Santo joins Steve Fall and Dan Cornelius with the rock trio ON. A seriously exciting tour is kicking off on Valentine’s Day that will give their fans a dose of everything new and some classic material. This latest single is going to be a crowd favourite and it’s taking the band to an even bigger audience. A new album is due to be recorded in the early summer with involvement from the epic Martin Bisi, who’s worked with Brian Eno, Sonic Youth, Iggy Pop, and Herbie Hancock (links to eBay) plus many more. Their eponymous LP has been making waves the world over, carrying on the flame from the Acid Test days. Break You is another powerful push from the band, getting the tour rolling and their music in everyone’s heads. A quick and ferocious guitar riff begins the music with a thumping of drums and bass. A bend in the chord brings the verse to the front as Lucy Di Santo opens with her synonymous voice. Punky and attitude laden vocals push the boundaries further with the punchy lyrics. A chorus enters, the music shifts into a harmonising flux. A grunge sensation leans in with the evolution of melody with the words and guitar shifting in unison towards their own perspective. With the tempered rage of distortion that fizzes at the edges of tone and the persistent drive of rhythm that pins it together, a fantastic groove and primal energy encompasses the song.
