Rocket Kings
She’s Going To Mars Reading Alternative rock and pop group Rocket Kings present the second single from their upcoming new album. The twelve-track Paving The Way brings the sophomore sound with extra clarity, skill, and passion as the band plunge in to the talent pool of experience already gained. An ethic to reflect the upbeat and mindful style of bands such as The Beautiful South, The Cranberries, Teenage Fanclub, and Belle and Sebastian, the Reading-based quintet of composers rise to the challenge and meet the target face-on. Dave Stewart on ukulele and vocals, Bex Crossland on vocals and ukulele, David Heath behind the drums, Jess Tuthill on ukulele and vocals, and Yoshiko Nakayama with the bass, bring a huge sound of harmony and string with a hefty rhythm section to keep it all together. A choppy riff opens the track with an upbeat and rock n roll sensibility. The drums kick in with a vocal section that instantly hits as more than adequate for the professional. None of these half-on musicians, this group are pitch perfect. A breezy and story-like delivery provides inventive lyrics that sit well on subject like comic book strips in perfect order. A tale of an adventuress with nothing to lose lifts us off the ground and shoots us up into some kind of musical orbit. She’s Going To Mars takes a tour of the solar system via catchy chords and lively rhythms draped in a quality melody. Bass Beats And Backstreet Vibes Ring Out From Mariposa The Latest From Italian IDM Trio Fuera18/10/2023
Fuera
Mariposa Fueraroom via ADA through Warner Music Flying the flag for Italian Intelligent Dance Music, Fuera bring their latest single Mariposa. Unifying sentiments from a massive spectrum of sound, utilising elements of rap, psychedelic punk, techno, and invariably – dance, this techno-hop trio from Naples is bringing the goods over the Alps and into the stereos of music fans the world over. A new single brings the group, who have been likened to a mix-up of The Prodigy, Fat White Family, and Aphex Twin, to new grounds of listenability and reach with backing rooting right down to the big names. Ambient tones and voice samples bring out a settled energy and an RnB infused rhythm opens the tune. Metered vocals chant in poetic lines as the bass throws itself down and aligns with the flow. Before we know it, the music has risen from the pan and provided us with chewy and thick vibes that tingle with interesting flavours. Melodic vocals mingle with jostling melodies that foam in the rhythmic matric laid down for the seeds to sprout. Clever techno breaks effervesce along with sumptuous gear changes of harmony that give the music a continual tangent quality that creates infinite possibility. Fuera’s Mariposa is laden with deft transitions and motivational melodics that heighten the senses and encourage full-body movement. It Isn’t Nice To Fool Mother Nature Hide The Junk Records With a plan to establish a vibrant community of music producers, DJs, and digital artists, X Club. have founded Hide The Junk Records to act as a magnet for likeminded talent from across the board. A 4-track EP has surfaced from the music house that illuminated itself track by track along the months of August, September, and October. Now out in full, HTJ001 has registered and resounded with the techno duos pacey and high-class energy. Back in the day, X Club. founded their creativity during the warehouse music boom in Australia, jamming with 90s style techno and electronica and reliving the glory days of youth for so many. Now living in London, they’ve swapped the sunshine for swathes of people as the English capital boasts a thriving dance music culture. With this new chapter of production fully underway, it’s a good time to remember It Isn’t Nice To Fool Mother Nature. It opens with a barrage of drumming that rivers through the dry valley dust, scooping up the leftovers and swirling them into motion. New layers of tone enter to lean over the treble section as the fire rages beneath in the guise of bass and cymbal. Twisting effects drive the motion forward in neat packets of percussive energy. A break gives way to another dimension as elevations of sound drift between the vibrant humming of persistent drum. A simmer down unleashes synthesiser pads that chime in short-sustained harmonies that resonate with the quick-rolling snare. Uplifting and full of bounce, It Isn’t Nice To Fool Mother Nature from X Club. is like a hammer to the nails in our soul. Tight, hard-hitting, and with moments of abstract imagination, the rhythm-fest takes us to new and inventive places. Flug 8
Raifuku Maru Ransom Note Records The celebrated Danish soundsmith Flug 8 returns with his latest album. Bermuda LP revisits the artist’s time-tested style of ambient and space-age sonic extravaganzas that leap from the amp and envelope us in mystery and marvel. Highly acclaimed for years, and riding on the huge wave of support that manifested alongside 2020’s Electric Fields LP, the electronica and ambient producer leans in once again and whispers pure class. Raifuku Maru has rightly shown itself as a prime target for listening and enjoyment with the video single doing well across the platforms. Music fans can be glad to know that Flug 8 releases Bermuda LP on limited edition purple cassette alongside the usual streaming options, there are only 50 of these going so you know it’s a collector’s item before it’s even out. Spacious robotica beams out in vibrant bursts of cosmic semblance with various tones and effects creating a focus of obscure clarity. Deep horn-like notes resonate from the mists in climbing intensity as eerie architecture gracefully orbits overhead. Churning vectors pinpoint nuances within a flow of mechanised artistry that trembles with post-human sentiments. Artificial vocal sounds chatter along lines of improvised coding while slow and powerful turns of the music deliver us to their destination. Terry Emm
Dwell Hertfordshire Folk-inspired and down-to-earth, Terry Emm continues his journey via avenues of singer-songwriter creativity. It was earlier this year when Terry Emm gave us Wish You Were Here. The new album featured the talented Maz O’Connor on vocal for a number of tracks and pushed Emm to his rightful place among the suited crowd. Furthering his repertoire and reach, Terry Emm has worked long and hard to give us Dwell. Taking flight on the wings of the previous work, this upbeat and catchy folk track passes the torch to the future while sitting back in reverence. A smooth and grounded acoustic guitar begins the song with a quick changing chord melody. Vocal and drums hits the target after just a bar or two and Terry Emm delivers with the clarity of close-up and choreographed melody that outlines the words in easy to hear sections. A joining of guitar and voice gives the lines an energy of tone that helps to emote the story as extra layers of string add harmonic tangents of feeling to the song. Dwell from Terry Emm is a short and upbeat folk-rock tune that feels like an A-lister. Let’s hope it gets there. Karamelien
Digital Imogen East Grinstead The alternative modern rock band Karamelien are preparing for their new album release. Living With The Moon is just around the corner and to keep us all tenderised they’ve provided us with a new single. We all know that social media is easy to fake, we can choose to filter our photos and never post our humanity in favour of giving the impression we are in the pages of a celebrity magazine. We’re entitled to use these things how we want to, but when it comes to comparisons and competitiveness, it’s good to remember that people are much more than their profile and like brigade. It’s brave to be real, you can almost feel the judgement sometimes. With the studio dab-hand Ian Caple, who’s worked with Massive Attack, Mansun, Vanessa Paradis, Tindersticks, and Tricky, the album and single have been made to ultra-modern premium standards. The band also enlisted bassist Lee Pomeroy to complete their ensemble, bringing the tones previously used by acts such as Take That, ELO, Yes, and Rick Wakeman to the fold. Let’s meet Digital Imogen. The music begins with a crack of drums and a blur of blues guitar. Keyboards and bass dive in and swim the currents of rhythm and melody with effervescent vibe. The lovely voice of Léanie Kaleido enters with a diva swagger and begins to tell the story. We hear the words, the character of Digital Imogen becomes a vocal reality. A blues and rock pace keeps an upbeat flow of funky music to sway along with as the song takes us on a poetic journey through the persona of someone trapped in their own online image. Imogen the imaginary image. Digital Imogen by Karamelien is a wonderful addition to the playlist and no-doubt frames the rest of the upcoming album perfectly.
