Chew Magna
Secrets Stray Cat Records When Manchester lads get together and make music, the world usually pays attention. And Chew Magna are proving to be one of the reasons we do it. Secrets is a feedback fest that looks at the liars among us and the people who talk a load of rubbish about things they know little or nothing about. A short and snappy number that began life as an acoustic song has been completely transformed by the band’s ability to make a lot of noise. Made in Salford at the White Hotel Studio with production by Martin Hurley of SWAYS, the pop melodies and fiery energy work together like yin and yang to fully form the orb of sound. A wail of tempered distortion curls into the picture as a deep and funky bass begins to chugger like an old-fashioned tractor. Drums begin to smash with punky quickness as the guitars rise to clamour to the vocals. A happy sense of melody in the verses gives the music an upbeat feel that climbs in attitude as the chorus breaks. Musical interludes within the formula offer secretive snippets of sound that turn and twist within the forward surge of heaviness. You can follow Chew Magna on Instagram and Twitter

ON
Make Me Indiestructable Records Between Toronto and New York City, ON bring a brand new take on the rock music scene with their latest single Make Me. Released last week and now already making its way around the world, the track takes their influences such as PJ Harvey, Nirvana, and Sonic Youth to new realms of creative territory. With Steve Fall on the guitar, Dan Cornelius on the drums, and Lucy DiSanto rocking the bass and the microphone, members of Acid Test, Danko Jones, and Deliuss bring ON to life with a super-group style of experience and fandom that focusses on great music and memorable live events. Written when touring Mexico in the 90s, Make Me is resurrected for the studio with expert attention from Martin Bisi, who’s previously worked for Sonic Youth, Swans, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop and lots of other equally as prolific acts. I can’t make you listen to it, but I think you should. A sneaky rise of amplitude brings an already fired up riff into earshot. A grunge style guitar chord progression rips against the snap of the snare drum as the music kicks into action. A rising vocal pushes the buttons as rhythmic and stylish riffs punch the air and stomp the floor with melody and energy. There is a heaviness to the mix as distortion crumbles the notes into one another like a biscuit topping, and rock drums keep the pulse raging as the verses revolve around the progressive spiral of upliftment. Fire and brimstone rumbles within this hard-hitting and feminine-fused nu-grunge that doesn’t care if you like it or not. Kei Car
Separate Germany Berlin’s music scene is not just about electronica and industrial, there’s plenty of rock n roll and psy-funk to go around as well. Kei Car have taken the beat and made it their own with a successful run of releases, live shows, and media attention. It’s not that their vintage influences make them suitable for grandparents, but don’t be surprised if yours like this band as much as you do. Written during 2020 in a BnB somewhere in Brandenburg, Separate has been given the studio treatment and is now a quality radio single being played on an international basis. A sleek and muffled rhythm opens out as funky guitar notes shimmer in the space between. A compressed vocal calls out like a telephone voice as melodic synthesiser begin to join the sway. A slow-dance rhythm takes hold as the music opens into clarity with a new chorus verse structure. A sense of the early 90s simmers on the low heat as a new wave of lounge sensation fills the bars. Emotions find themselves dressed in suits as they awkwardly take their turns to fuel the vocals. Gradual progressions and jazz-blues melodies feel their way through the spongy compositions of funky rhythms and shiny chords. Kei Car bring an evocative and meaningful atmosphere to a breed of easy listening we can all enjoy. You can follow Kei Car on Facebook and Instagram
pMad
Fury Co. Galway It’s always a treat when pMad sends something over for Sound Read Six to feature, the Irish goth-wave fan-favourite maintains his piledriving energy with trimmings galore. The latest track was released on America’s Independence Day. Fury is described as that time when your fury just boils over. I’ve been there, you’ve been there, we’ve all been there. Sometimes things so go against our wishes or way that we’re simply left feeling like we don’t exist, make sense, or matter. That’s what makes me angry, anyway. pMad might have his own ideas so we had better listen to the music and find out what it sounds like. A sneaky synthesiser sound slithers into the system as chunky rhythms rise in the bass. pMad begins, a spoken-word song in his usual emotionally charged and controlled style begins. A thrashy drum and quick paced guitars join the music to bring a rocking industrial edge to the gloomy evocations. Guitars chunter along in palm-muted rhythms as notes lean out from the mass into wailing feedback. The surge of rhythm takes the music into intense zones of headspace as pMad defines the heated moment. Elements of Rammstein and Mortiis join in with darkwave volleys of looped beats. Pelican Rocket
Monkeydriver Sweden With a western blues infused hard rock style, Sweden’s Pelican Rocket return to deliver Monkeydriver. This latest single further establishes the group across national borders with radio play across Europe and beyond. A catchy and chorus-driven composition is always what we can expect with Pelican Rocket and for guitar fans their talent can only be described as a treat. A warm blues lick feeds from the stereo as the music growls beneath in anticipation. A surge of keyboards and drums opens out and delivers a pulse we can immediately move along to. Powerful vocals then push forward and take the lead. Almost shouted, melodic and impassioned words holler out in lines of rhythmic nerve-tingling verses. A bobbing rhythmic energy rocks back and forth as the musical power literally forces us out of our seats if only in spirit. A great song for driving or for cleaning out your closets, get that monkey from your back and get into this. You can follow Pelican Rocket on Instagram |
