Elliot Cole, Fiona Gillespie, Makaris
Elliot Cole is well-known for scoring the film Evolver, directed by Terrence Malick. Described as a “contemporary bard” by the NY Times, his writing has been utilised by Grammy-Award winning Roomful Of Teeth and taken on by over 250 groups around the world. Fiona Gillespie was brought up in a Celtic musical household and quickly found her own feet in the magical genre of thought. A member of The Chivalrous Crickets and a keen participant in collaborative projects, her adventurous spirit fits perfectly with the song. Makaris were formed in 2018 and named after a Scottish Royal court troubadour. Their music takes inspiration from old stories and history that take the listener back to previous eras where romance and risk were prominent in our lives. Bringing a trio of talents into the fold to reinvent a precious and enchanting Celtic-baroque folk song from historical Scotland, Tam Lin becomes the figurehead for our modern memory of past times. Turning the magical and captivating composition into a new-sounding rock opera has been a massive task, gladly undertaken by the phenomenal skills of Elliot Cole, Fiona Gillespie, and Makaris. Set on the spooky stage of All-Hallows-Eve and brought to life by the traditional expertise and long-established musical style of the ancestral artists, the 17th Century ballad from the Borders finds a new set of clothes to wear in today’s flashy world. Taking on the story of the girl who got pregnant then went her own way against the will of her community is this terrific ensemble of minds.
This epic track is turned into a movie-like video. It opens with guitars and pipes that spell a mysterious allure into the theatrical silence. Melody unfolds and reveals sparkling motifs and timeless harmonies. A bassoon and horns enter to open the door for the vocal. Delicate and beautiful, the voice projects in a traditional folk operatic style. Whispers of Pentagram and Clannad clothe the sound as we’re taken far back in time. The song begins to fluctuate, parts and acts become apparent as the story begins to spin. Dramatic and poetic, the lines draw us in with spontaneous melody evolution and orchestral infusions of beautifully brilliant instruments. Male vocal joins in, the complement of singers reveals a scripted play of musicality like something from the big theatre. Scenes of historical setting add to the fantastical story that whisks us into realms of by-gone days. Epic and intriguing, the music jumps from sense to sense with adaptations of the story's various corners.
