Welcome to Sound Read Six - Where new music comes to you.
Shining a light on the human side of addiction and mental-health, Junkie Boy takes story-teller musician Brian Barron into the gutters and alleys where tragedy and euphoria walk hand in hand. Dedicated to the real people who stumbled into the pit-fall of drug use and couldn't get out, Junkie Boy tells the untold story to the sound of intimate acoustic guitar. Taken from his second album, the fast-rising Brian Barron takes the next step into his own musical story. His newest song is inspired by Bob Dylan and Arlo Guthrie, at the same time as drawing on his own personal observations and experiences of life in Ireland. The most touching aspect of the track is its universality, with addiction manifesting in many areas including social media, fame, and attention. The graphically disturbing scene on the cover not necessarily points to the truth behind the music and when I've seen people shooting up, they put the needle the other way.
The guitar brings in the melody as chord shapes are dissected into sequences of sound. Brian Barron begins, the title of the song is the first word. It sounds like a theme to a noir cartoon, made for grown-ups. We walk through the shady streets to the beat of a dream as the music describes the sorrowful tale of so many who have been cursed with the affliction leading to being a junkie. Short, sweet, and strangely innocent, the 70s feel like they've had a second wind.
