Evidence Of A Struggle
Do’Oa Chicago The debut single from Chicago’s Evidence Of A Struggle slams the scene with all the force we expect. Building on the sound ethic of groups like Tortoise and Dif Juz, featured on 4AD, the mixing of influences and styles has unleashed some serious headspace. The new album is due on the 9th of June, which gives us plenty of time to get to know the new song and learn it off by heart. A dynamic group of community-oriented musicians, led by the prolific luminary Reverend Billy Simmons, the cinematic and multifaceted compositions lay waste to the mediocre and drab. A funky keyboard motif plays out with anthemic strides. Grunting bass guitar joins the flow with passive swipes at the percussion. Digital beats enter to counterbalance the rock sound as a cool lead guitar swells with a blues and rock n roll energy. Harmonics and tuneful builds line the rhythmic avenue of progression. Sweeping tides of sound launch back and forth from abstraction to release fiery passages of intention. A post-rock instrumental adventure unravels with a snappy beat and catchy breaks that fulfil the imagination’s desire. Tim Easton
Sliver Of Light Black Mesa Records Out now on Oklahoma-based Black Mesa Records, Nashville’s Tim Easton renews his contract with the crowd one more time. Sliver Of Light takes the veteran of stage and studio to another chapter on the journey. The track features a video, made in Tennessee, directed by none other than Jamey Wood. The song was written about a shared friend who was on life support after falling over. Something that could happen to any of us at any time, the song is universally understandable. A travelling soul, Tim Easton grew up between Tokyo, Japan and Akron, Ohio. As he grew up, he began playing everywhere in between as a touring musician. A life of sound and expression has led Tim Easton to a level of quality and proficiency that only the very best grow into. A moody guitar chord progression opens the music as Tim Easton enters with words about the illusory nature of the devil. The band rises with drums and bass with keyboard and harmony as the song works its way up the ladder. The driving sense of laid-back rock that feels like something from later Genesis albums reels on the rhythm as the melody shines with shards of truth. A cool swagger joins the marching as the lead guitar finds the perfect melodic interludes to sit between the words. A joyous and meaningful score meets the poignant and deeply felt lyrics about a moving subject. We can all find hope when we don’t shut ourselves off from the sliver of light. Missy Balsam
Move My Body Florida Adapting Sanskrit Yoga mantras into alt-pop anthems, Missy Balsam brings two of her favourite things in one great sounding package. Since releasing her first album in 2016, things have never been better for this inventive and dynamic female artist. Having played at several Yoga festivals and toured her music to local scenes all around, momentum is high, and the direction is true with Move My Body. Groovy synth stabs bring a dance motif to the forefront as rhythm gradually builds with percussive flow. Layers of drumming grow in intensity until the bass and vocal take the lead. Missy Balsam projects her words with mantra like repeating affirmations. We feel the rhythm take hold from the base to the head as rhythms chant seductive patterns of kinesis with churning hypnosis. Building compositions sprout wings as the harmonies overlap into lyrics as the punchy shamanic drive takes us forward. Ruth Blake
Not Your Angel Somerset Drawing a line through the angelic stereotype of graceful, sweet, and delicate, Ruth Blake presents her latest single. It’s almost certain if angels were real, they’d sometimes be frightening and difficult to get along with, we’re only human after-all. True beauty doesn’t always come from the image of angelic goodness and Ruth Blake wants to make it clear she is not your angel. A messenger none-the-less, her song makes us look at the commercialisation of character and acceptability that we’re often told is the only way. Made in collaboration with the renowned James Yuill, a producer who’s worked with the likes of Mint Royale, Au Revoir Simone, Erasure, and M83. A sonic drill bores into the room with guitar lead that vibrates with dirty distortion. Ruth Blake enters with sultry vocals, synth bass and reverberating drums join in to sweep the energy in clear directions. Melody folds around Blake’s voice as the chorus rises in pitch and emotion. Sing-a-long sections hit with the vibrating atmosphere of heavy bass and thrilled blues guitar. A dynamic and inventive edge maintains a sharp cutting-edge through interesting sound with new inflections and musical inputs that continue the fresh composition.
